NexGen Energy started construction of its massive Rook I uranium project in Saskatchewan, Canada, this week.

The C$2.2 billion project now begins an estimated 4 years of construction, the underground mine and mill designed to eventually produce around 30Mlbpa of uranium once operational.

It makes the project one of the world's largest new sources of uranium. In comparison, Cameco's McArthur River/Key Lake operations are licensed to produce 25Mlbpa, with 2026 guidance set at 14-16.5Mlb.

“Today, we transition from demonstrating what this project will be to delivering it - for the benefit of local communities, Saskatchewan, Canada, and the world,” NexGen chief executive Leigh Curyer said.

“Artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, electrification, and energy security are driving unprecedented demand for electricity. Nuclear energy has become key to meeting that demand - and with it, uranium has become one of the world's most strategic resources.”

Major earthworks and surface infrastructure are advancing, the company said, with the initial 3,000-foot airstrip commissioned, and expanded site accommodations complete and occupied. The full 5,840-foot airstrip is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with shaft development planned for 2027.

In March this year, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved NexGen's environmental assessment for the project and granted a permit to construct Rook I, which ticked the last regulatory box ahead of the project build.

The 2021 feasibility study outlined an 11-year mine life to produce 233.6Mlb of yellowcake, with an after-tax net present value at 8% of C$3.5 billion, an internal rate of return of 52.4% and a payback period of 0.9 years.
