Role Overview

The Rook I Site Summer Student Program is an opportunity to make an impact and build your skill set while gaining valuable experience. 

The position is based out of the Rook I site, which is located approximately 155 km north of La Loche. The Rook I Site Summer Student will work a one-week on, one-week off rotational schedule, and will stay at the Rook I camp during their time on site. During the Program, the Rook I Site Summer Student will gain real world work experience in a mineral exploration and project development camp.

Key Responsibilities

The Rook I Site Summer Student Program will focus on aligning each student’s placement with their field of study and professional interests. Placement vocations across the Rook I site will range from:
  •  site services
  •  kitchen operations
  •  custodial support
  •  geology and surveying
  •  environmental monitoring
  •  health and safety
  •  office administration
NexGen staff and Summer Student Coordinators will make every effort to align student placements with their academic backgrounds and career goals. By pairing students in departments that reflect their interests and/or studies, the Program aims to enhance their learning experience, build relevant skills, and support meaningful career development.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

The Rook I Site Summer Student Program is for students who:
  • Are from the Local Priority Area (LPA)*.
  • Are at least 18 years of age as of the position start date.
  • Have received a Grade 12 diploma, and are attending or returning to an accredited post-secondary institution in the Fall of 2026, of which proof of enrollment may be required.
  • Are mature, self-reliant, and eager to learn new skills.
*LPA communities include Descharme Lake, La Loche, Clearwater River Dene Nation, Bear Creek, Garson Lake, Black Point, Turnor Lake, Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Buffalo Narrows, Buffalo River Dene Nation, Dillon, St. George’s Hill, and Michel Village.
