Role Overview

Reporting to the Senior Project Metallurgist, the Project Metallurgist, EIT is responsible for supporting technical engineering activities performed by consultants and 3rd party engineering contractors on behalf of NexGen.  The Project Metallurgist, EIT will work collaboratively with the NexGen teams and multiple EPCM teams to ensure technical excellence is achieved.

The Project Metallurgist, EIT will support the development of process engineering deliverables ensuring they meet the project’s scope and are delivered on schedule and budget. Such engineering deliverables included process designs for the process plant, effluent treatment plant, acid plant, metallurgical and analytical laboratories, and related surface infrastructure.

The Project Metallurgist, EIT will coordinate in-house metallurgical testwork performed by 3rd party laboratories and consultants to inform decisions of engineering design; fulfilling requirements of environmental risk assessment and licensing.

Key Responsibilities

(Including but not limited to)
  • Provide support and work collaboratively with other technical / business units on developing a thorough understanding of the project requirements and roadmaps related to scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Work collaboratively with EPCM engineering design activities and technical review of drawings and documents for the process plant and related surface infrastructure.
  • Inclusive of design basis, design criteria, process flow diagrams, mass and energy balance, capacity studies, engineering and equipment calculations, piping and instrumentations diagrams, process control logic, and operating and capital cost estimates.
  • Learn SysCAD process modelling software through hands-on training, in order to complete process simulations as needed for the process plant design.
  • Participate and contribute as part of a multi-disciplinary team to perform in-house engineering studies, trade-off studies, and cost analyses.
  • Ensure that licensing, environmental assessment (EA), and any other permitting requirements are appropriately integrated into the engineering workflows, collaborating with the EA/Licensing teams where required.
  • Work collaboratively with the project leadership team to incorporate commissioning and operational readiness consideration into the plant design and engineering deliverables.
  • Participate in necessary engineering and design workshops (i.e., HAZOPs, HAZIDs, etc.) throughout the project phase.
  • Author scopes of work and test procedures for NexGen metallurgical test work consultant activities and manage those activities, including cost and schedule controls.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Materials or Metallurgical Engineering
  • Basic understanding of mass/energy balance
  • Basic understanding of process & instrumentation control
  • Experience in metallurgical testwork development and familiarity with Design of Experiment (DoE) approach
  • Experience with process simulation software
  • 1-2 years of previous mining or metallurgical engineering experience
  • Experience with working on projects in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Basic understanding of procurement, contracting, and commissioning methodologies
  • Knowledge of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations
