Role Overview
The Director of Construction leads the development of constructability, construction strategy, construction execution planning, and overseeing the organization, scheduling and execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing an Integrated Project Team of construction managers and construction personnel personnel.
- Provide leadership to ensure an elite standard across all aspects of constructability and construction execution planning and implementation during detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and pre-commissioning phases of the Project.
- Ensuring ownership and integration of Health & Safety and Quality Assurance into all aspects of construction.
- Development of construction strategy and plans, schedules, and developing cost estimates and risk assessments for the Project, including definition of Construction Work Packages to guide engineering activities.
- Preparing and coordinating the required construction-related reporting and key performance indicators.
- In-depth review and approval of engineering and construction deliverables.
- Establishing and managing oversight of self-performed work and integrating those services into the overall construction execution plan including management of site services during the project.
- Interfacing with the NexGen Integrated Management System (IMS) Team to establish field and construction procedures and objectives in line with organizational policies and programs.
- Proactively identify and mitigate project and construction risks.
- Interfacing with NexGen Project Leadership, HR, and the Community, participating in the labour studies, labour sourcing exercises, and ensuring that community involvement strategies are implemented for construction-related activities.
- Participating in industrial relations activities and maintaining rapport with labour unions.
- Developing site organization and staffing plans required to execute construction activities in line with the Project schedule and budget.
- Ensuring that Project Leadership is informed of construction issues and concerns in a timely manner as they may arise.
- Coordinating the preparation, issuance, and implementation of the Construction Execution Plan.
- Facilitating turnover of completed facilities to the pre-commissioning team.
- Interfacing with the NexGen Environment, Permitting, and Licensing teams, to ensure the necessary permits and licenses are identified and obtained prior to the start of construction activities on site, and that compliance is maintained thereafter.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Engineering degree or equivalent combination of formal education, training and experience.
- Minimum of 20 years of leadership and construction management experience in the design/constructability, development, and management of construction sites in the mining industry.
- Demonstrated health and safety management focus in the construction phase of project delivery, and extensive knowledge of health and safety management procedures, safe work practices, and applicable legislation.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities in strategic planning, resource allocation, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
- Efficient and skilled in planning, organization, leadership, management, and administrative processes.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships and communicate directly with the Project Leadership on key issues in a timely, efficient, and trustworthy manner.
- Complete knowledge of complex projects with engineering, procurement, construction, jobsite management, and other project related activities, their interfaces, and interdependencies.
- Experience in both surface and underground construction, including process facilities, surface infrastructure, underground infrastructure, shaft sinking, ground protection and lateral development.
- Demonstrated experience in design and development of large, remote, EPCM-led projects in the resource sector.
- Ability to mentor senior level project staff and provide construction leadership.
