Role Overview

The Community Summer Student Program is an opportunity to make an impact and build your skill set while gaining valuable leadership experience. 

The position is based out of the NexGen Office in the Dene Empowerment Centre in La Loche, and follows standard business hours, Monday to Friday.

During the Program, the Community Summer Student Coordinator will have the opportunity to gain real-world work experience and strengthen their leadership skills by offering supervisory support to students participating in the Community Summer Student Program stationed in roles across NexGen’s Local Priority Area (LPA) Indigenous Nations and communities. The Community Summer Student Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, reporting, and support of Summer Students.

This role ensures that all 10 participating Community Summer Students receive a positive and supportive learning experience. The Community Summer Student Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for the Indigenous Nation Band, Municipality / Village Office, or community organization the students report to, the Summer Students during NexGen-led community initiatives and events, and NexGen staff for the duration of the Program, facilitating clear communication and smooth program operations throughout the summer work term.

The Community Summer Student Coordinator will also support additional NexGen-led initiatives and activities, working with the NexGen Project Liaison Manager in the NexGen La Loche office.

Key Responsibilities

(Including but not limited to)
  • Facilitate communication between the Indigenous Nation, Municipality / Village Office, or community organization, Summer Students during NexGen-led initiatives or events, program administrators, NexGen’s Project Liaison Manager and Community Liaison Lead to ensure a smooth flow of information and address any gaps in understanding or expectations.
  • Support and organize the NexGen-led activities.
  • Assist in the overall execution of the Program, ensuring that it runs smoothly and efficiently documenting the program and collecting feedback and photos for final reports.
  • Provide regular feedback to Community Summer Students, contributing to their learning and development. Participate in the evaluation process to assess the effectiveness of the program and the performance of the students. Administer and track weekly reports as well as exit interviews.
  • Act as a point of contact for any issues or concerns the employers or Summer Students might have, offering solutions and support as needed.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

The Community Summer Student Coordinator is open to applicants who:
  • Are from the Local Priority Area (LPA)*.
  • Have a high school diploma.
  • Are currently enrolled in Year 3 or 4 of an accredited post-secondary program in the Fall of 2026, of which proof of enrollment and intent to return may be required.
  • Have demonstrated leadership qualities, and are mature, self-reliant, and eager to learn to new skills.
*LPA communities include Descharme Lake, La Loche, Clearwater River Dene Nation, Bear Creek, Garson Lake, Black Point, Turnor Lake, Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Buffalo Narrows, Buffalo River Dene Nation, Dillon, St. George’s Hill, and Michel Village.
