Role Overview

The Community Summer Student Program is an opportunity to make an impact and build your skill set while gaining valuable experience. The position is based in the Indigenous Nation or community in which the Summer Student resides, and follows standard business hours, Monday to Friday. 

The Community Summer Student is a high school student who supports the delivery of community‑focused programs and services within their local Indigenous Nation or community, working directly with partnered organizations. This role is designed to strengthen relationships between Local Priority Area (LPA) youth, LPA Indigenous Nations and communities, and NexGen by providing practical experience in engaging residents, supporting local initiatives, and enhancing community well-being.

Key Responsibilities

(Including but not limited to)
Working under the supervision of staff at the partnering organization, with additional support from a Summer Student Coordinator, the student will assist with activities aligned with their community organization’s mission and priorities. 

Responsibilities may include supporting program planning and delivery, participating in community outreach and events, gathering feedback from residents, and helping ensure that programs are welcoming, inclusive, and responsive. The Community Summer Student will act as a positive ambassador for both the partnering organization and NexGen, reflecting shared values and meaningful partnership, as well as community wellbeing. 

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

The Community Summer Student Program is for students who:
  • Are from the Local Priority Area (LPA)*.
  • Are between the ages of 15 to 17 years of age as of position start date.
  • Are attending high school in the Fall of 2026 or recently graduated.
  • Are mature, self-reliant, eager to learn, and are positive stewards in their community and school.
*LPA communities include Descharme Lake, La Loche, Clearwater River Dene Nation, Bear Creek, Garson Lake, Black Point, Turnor Lake, Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Buffalo Narrows, Buffalo River Dene Nation, Dillon, St. George’s Hill, and Michel Village.
